Rheumatology
The group focuses its research projects on non-traumatic musculoskeletal diseases, mainly autoimmune diseases (Lupus, Scleroderma, Vasculitis, Inflammatory myopathies,...), and immune-mediated arthropathies (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthritis,...). The group has mainly carried out clinical research studies (description of disease phenotypes, response to treatments) and, in recent years, basic research (histopathology, immunology, and genetics) has been added. Likewise, innovative projects have been developed (training of rheumatic patients, thermal imaging in arthritis, mobile devices for monitoring chronic diseases) for application to clinical practice. Four members of the group are doctors and 5 more are finishing their PhD. We have got updated records of disease groups, clinical situation and prescribed advanced (biological) treatments. We have got a collection of biological samples of all these autoimmune diseases in different stages of evolution and different treatments

Strategic objectives
- Develop clinical research in rheumatic diseases, delving into pathophysiology, biomarkers, and mechanisms of response to therapies, to advance personalized treatment.
- Create large databases of inflammatory rheumatic diseases through the automatic and widespread extraction of information from electronic health records.
- Participate in national and international networks and joint projects.
- Develop digital systems for data generation in the patient's environment to improve the management of rheumatic diseases.
Research lines
- Clinical research in inflammatory arthropathies (RA, PsA, AS), and development of biomarkers to predict treatment response.
- Process improvement and development of clinical research lines in autoimmune diseases (SLE, Sjögren's syndrome, SSc, vasculitis) and other rare diseases.
- Innovation in the management of rheumatological diseases through the development of digital devices and artificial intelligence to improve monitoring and promote patient self-management.
- Research on health outcomes and quality of life for patients with rheumatic diseases.
