BAT-VTE: A Newly Funded European Clinical Trial to Optimize Antithrombotic Therapy

The BAT-VTE clinical trial project (Best Antithrombotic Therapy in Patients With Acute Venous ThromboEmbolism While Taking Antiplatelets) has achieved a major milestone by securing international funding. The project was selected as one of seven projects globally to receive funding under the EFFECT Trial call, a program supported by the ERA4Health Partnership via the European Union.

BAT-VTE is a pragmatic academic trial evaluating a therapeutic de-escalation strategy in patients with venous thromboembolic disease receiving antiplatelet therapy, aiming to reduce the risk of bleeding without compromising efficacy. While the data are reassuring in patients receiving anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation, the question remains open in patients requiring anticoagulation for VTE, a distinct population. The study also has the potential to inform future clinical guidelines and standardize care for this complex and growing patient population.

"The trial seeks to provide robust evidence to guide safer and more effective management of venous thromboembolism in patients receiving antiplatelet therapy".

The project is coordinated by Dr. Laurent Bertoletti, Hospital Practitioner at Jean Monnet University, Saint-Étienne (France). It also involves two national coordinators: Dr. Roberto Pola from Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli (IRCCS), (Italy) and Dr. David Jiménez from Instituto Ramón y Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria (IRYCIS-Spain), with additional support provided by ECRIN (European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network) / SCREN (Spain).

Our institution acts as the National Coordinating Centre in Spain. The team is led by Dr. DAVID JIMÉNEZ CASTRO, with Dr. RAQUEL MORILLO GUERRERO as Co-Principal Investigator. They are the Head and a member, respectively, of the Respiratory Diseases group. Spain will contribute to this project with a total of 8 clinical recruitment sites from a geographically wide range:

Hospital Galdakao (Vizcaya)

Hospital Gregorio Marañón (Madrid)

Hospital Clinic (Barcelona)

Hospital La Fe (Valencia)

Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol (Barcelona)

Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca (Murcia)

Hospital Virgen del Rocío (Sevilla)

Clínica Universitaria de Navarra (CUM), Madrid

"Congratulations to the IRYCIS team for being part of this excellent European consortium. Their participation will contribute significantly to advancing knowledge in the management of venous thromboembolim".

The project is supported by the European Partnership ERA4Health and funded in Spain by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), highlighting the importance of coordinated European efforts to advance health research and innovation.
