Drug utilisation and health outcomes of pharmacotherapy
We are a transversal group, we have a wide knowledge and training in relation to pharmacotherapy with a high complexity and specialization. We are experts in the safe and effective use of medicines, applying efficiency and innovation criteria. On the other hand, being a central service, we have experience in process management.
Our clinical areas with greater presence of pharmacists are: elderly patient (geriatrics), infectious (HIV, HCV, HBV, HBV, PROA), hematology, rheumatology, dermatology, neurology and emergency. We offer:
- Pharmacovigilance, medication safety experience.
- Knowledge and availability of medications.
- Data on the use and consumption of medicines.
- Preparation of drug preparations.
- Clean rooms.
- Drug-related technologies.
- Structure for the management and development of Clinical Trials.
- Quality Management System Certification.

Milestones
- In 2024 the publication "Spanish version of the STOPP/START 3 criteria. Advances in the detection of inappropriate medication prescription in the elderly" received the Beltrán Baguena award for the best publication in 2023 in the Spanish journal of Geriatrics and Gerontology. This article includes the translation of the latest version of the STOPP-START criteria into Spanish and reviews the usefulness and use of the previous translated versions.
- Fernández J, Delgado E, González E, Álvarez AM, Vélez M. Potentially inappropriate prescriptions and potential prescription omissions in older people living with HIV. HIV Med. 2024;25(5): 587 - 599. DOI:10.1111/hiv.13616. This publication is a multicenter study of 10 hospitals in the Community of Madrid, which analyzes inappropriate prescribing and omission of appropriate medications in the older population with HIV. The results indicate a high prevalence of inappropriate prescribing in this cohort of patients and the need to develop strategies to reduce it.
- Esteban B, Serrano DR, Pérez Menéndez C, Vicente N, Álvarez A, Abete JF, Martín P. Stability of meropenem in portable elastomeric infusion devices: which protocol should be implemented in clinical practice?. Microbiol Spectr. 2024;12(2): e0206323. DOI:10.1128/spectrum.02063-23. This publication summarizes the stability of meropenem in elastomeric infusors so that the patient can take it outside the hospital, thus improving quality of life, but without compromising efficacy and safety. HPLC analysis has been performed, finding differences depending on the concentration of meropenem, so it is necessary to protocolize the use of this drug in elastomeric infusors.
- The group participates for the first time in obtaining a Rio Hortega contract, call AES 2024 (ISCIII). This incorporation allows to retain the talent of Hilario Martínez and to advance in the development of the project: "e-REALITI: Evaluation and monitoring of results in real life to optimize access to therapeutic innovation".
- Nine theses are being directed by pharmacists of the group, 7 related to pharmaceutical care and the improvement of health outcomes, the reduction of adverse effects and ineffectiveness, and the improvement of adherence to treatment in patients treated in the Hospital, elderly chronic, oncohematological, with severe asthma, HIV and heart failure. Specifically, one of these theses is related to the application of new technologies to improve the traceability of the development of chemotherapy treatments, and another one to the stability of antibiotics in elastomeric infusors.
