Strategic objectives

  • Study the determining factors and pathogenic mechanisms of infectious diseases that cause health problems in our environment, with special emphasis on environmental factors, host factors and factors of the microorganism itself.
  • Determine the best diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative approach for diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites prevalent in our environment.
  • Study the mechanisms of persistence of HIV and of the pharmacological interventions that can contribute to their eradication, in collaboration with national and international groups.
  • Determine the characteristics of infectious diseases that affect immigrants in Spain and travellers to tropical and subtropical zones by exploring their diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Define strategies for the optimisation of the use of antimicrobials in the treatment of community and hospital infections, that enable maximum efficacy to be obtained with the lowest toxicity for the patient, the fewest repercussions on the ecosystem and minimum pharmaceutical cost.

Research lines

  • HIV infection.
  • Imported infectious diseases (Tropical Medicine).
  • Infectious diseases in healthy and immunocompromised persons.
